Cabinet Decision Restrains Sports Minister as President Takes Control of Sri Lanka Cricket Crisis

November 14, 2023

President Ranil Wickremesinghe has empowered the Ministerial Sub-Committee, led by Foreign Minister Ali Sabry, to handle decisions concerning the suspension of Sri Lanka Cricket's (SLC) membership in the International Cricket Council (ICC). This decision sidelines the authority of Sports Minister Roshan Ranasinghe, who had earlier appointed an Interim Committee, leading to the ICC suspension.

The Cabinet, during its deliberations, also mandated that any future appointment of an interim committee for SLC must obtain prior approval from the Cabinet. This decision underscores a shift in control, limiting the unilateral actions of the Sports Minister in matters concerning Sri Lanka Cricket.

The recent turmoil in Sri Lanka Cricket, including the suspension by the ICC, has prompted a series of interventions at the highest levels of government. The President's directive to entrust the Ministerial Sub-Committee with key decisions signifies a coordinated effort to navigate the challenges faced by Sri Lanka Cricket and restore stability to the sport in the country.

This development follows a sequence of events that included the appointment of an Interim Committee by Sports Minister Roshan Ranasinghe, which was met with controversy and opposition.
