Main Suspect in Death Threats Against Former PUCSL Chairman Apprehended, Methamphetamine Seized

The Colombo Crimes Division (CCD) has apprehended the primary suspect linked to the death threats and extortion scheme against the former chairman of the Public Utilities Commission of Sri Lanka (PUCSL), Janaka Ratnayake. In the course of the arrest, approximately 12 grams of 'Ice' narcotic (crystal methamphetamine) were discovered in the suspect's possession, according to law enforcement.

The incident unfolded when, on October 16, Ratnayake reported to the Kirulapone Police Station that he had received a menacing phone call from an individual purporting to have a contract for his assassination. The caller demanded Rs. 1.5 million to spare Ratnayake's life. Subsequently, investigations into the complaint were transferred to the Colombo Crimes Division (CCD) on the instructions of the Senior Deputy Inspector General (SDIG) overseeing the Western Province.

On October 28, three individuals aged 24, 26, and 31 were arrested in connection with the case. Furthering the investigation, the CCD, on November 06, detained two additional suspects, aged 38 and 40, in the Pelwehera area of Dambulla. These individuals are believed to have provided accommodation to the main suspect and aided in the execution of the illicit scheme, as per police reports.
