"Sri Lanka's Corrupt Cricket Administrators Are Being Protected by Jay Shah": Sports Minister Makes Bold Statement in Parliament, Slams Judiciary Over Ruling

November 08, 2023

Sri Lanka's Sports Minister, Roshan Ranasinghe, has taken an aggressive stance against the judiciary following the recent court judgment that suspended the Gazette issued on the interim committee led by Arjuna Ranatunga, appointed for Sri Lanka Cricket. The minister's remarks included serious allegations against the judiciary, raising concerns of potential conflicts of interest.

Ranasinghe said the "corrupt circle" running the Sri Lanka cricket administration were being shielded by the umbrella of Jay Shah, the Chairman of the Asian Cricket Council and the Secretary to the BCCI. "This has now become a diplomatic issue between the two countries. I have written to him in this regard and urged him to not let this happen," Ranasinghe said.

Jay Shah is the son of India's BJP bigwig Amit Shah, a close associate of India's Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

In a strongly worded statement delivered in Parliament on November 8th, Sports Minister Ranasinghe criticized the judgment, asserting that it had been based on a single perspective, which he deemed as unfair and unbalanced. He expressed his disappointment in the decision-making process and the court's approach to the matter.

Furthermore, Minister Ranasinghe accused the Attorney General of failing to support the ministry and suggested that the Attorney General's actions were aimed at safeguarding corrupt officials within the Sri Lanka Cricket administration.

The minister also took the opportunity to address President Ranil Wickremesinghe, expressing his belief that the President had been misled by his close associates. Ranasinghe urged the President to make a clear choice between supporting him and standing with Sri Lanka Cricket President Shammi Silva, whose appointment has been a source of contention.
