The ongoing power struggle between Sri Lanka's President, Ranil Wickremesinghe, and the Sports Minister, Roshan Ranasinghe, continues to captivate the nation. Amidst this political clash, the sports minister has made a surprising offer, suggesting his readiness to tender his resignation and offer his post to the former World Cup-winning Sri Lanka cricket captain, Arjuna Ranatunga.
Speaking to the media in Colombo, Minister Roshan Ranasinghe declared his willingness to transfer his ministerial position to Arjuna Ranatunga, a notable figure in Sri Lankan cricket. He also asserted that the President's approval is not required to appoint an interim committee for Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC), emphasizing his actions were within his legal authority.
The sports minister expressed his commitment to performing his duties until he officially steps down.
This development unfolded after Minister Ranasinghe appointed an Interim Committee for SLC, chaired by Arjuna Ranatunga, following the authority granted by the Sports Law No. 25 of 1973. The committee comprises retired Supreme Court judges, S.I. Imam and Rohini Marasinghe, retired High Court judge Irangani Perera, along with other professionals. However, President Ranil Wickremesinghe was not informed of the sports minister's decision, leading to increased tensions within Sri Lanka's cricket administration.
