Sri Lanka's cricketing legend and former World Cup-winning captain, Arjuna Ranatunga, who assumed the role of chairman of the newly formed cricket interim committee, said his objective was to build a cricket family.
In an interview with a private TV station, Ranatunga made it clear that his primary objective is to rebuild a cohesive team rather than focusing on individual players. "I will not build individual players. I will build a team," he declared, emphasizing his commitment to fostering unity and teamwork within the Sri Lankan cricket setup.
Ranatunga's appointment as chairman of the interim committee follows widespread calls from cricket enthusiasts and stakeholders for the Sports Minister to take action to address the challenges within Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC). Acknowledging this sentiment, Ranatunga expressed gratitude to the Sports Minister for entrusting him with the pivotal role of cleaning up the cricket administration.
During the interview, Ranatunga did not mince words about the state of cricket administration in Sri Lanka, describing it as "corrupt." He stressed the importance of redirecting funds towards the development of school cricket as a fundamental strategy for building a strong and cohesive national team. This approach, he believes, will lay the foundation for a promising future in Sri Lankan cricket.
President Ranil Wickremesinghe, hiwever, has stated that he is unaware of the appointment of the new interim committtee and has directed to take the matter up at the Cabinet meeting today.
