"New Cricket Interim Committee Will Be Shot Down by BCCI's Jay Shah and ICC: Tough Times Ahead": Former Sports Minister Warns

November 06, 2023

In a bold move aimed at reinvigorating the administration of Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC), Sports Minister Roshan Ranasinghe has appointed a seven-member Interim Committee. This initiative, made possible under the Sports Law No. 25 of 1973, reflects the government's commitment to restoring the competitive edge of Sri Lankan cricket and addressing the challenges faced by the sport.

The Interim Committee will be chaired by the cricketing legend and former Sri Lankan captain, Arjuna Ranatunga. Renowned for leading the national cricket team to its historic World Cup victory in 1996, Ranatunga's appointment is seen as a significant step toward reshaping the future of cricket administration in Sri Lanka.

In response to these changes, former Sports Minister Navin Dissanayake expressed support for the move, despite potential opposition from key figures in the cricketing world. Dissanayake acknowledged the role of Jay Shah, Secretary to the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and the Head of the Asian Cricket Council (ACC), and the International Cricket Council (ICC) in potentially challenging these developments. However, Dissanayake emphasized that this action represents a welcome and positive step for Sri Lanka Cricket, highlighting the authority of the minister to make such decisions.

Drawing from personal experience, Dissanayake recalled their tenure as sports minister when they appointed Sidath Wettimuny as the President, even in the face of resistance from influential figures like Srinivasan. Dissanayake acknowledged that tough times may lie ahead but encouraged unwavering determination and commitment to address the challenges facing Sri Lanka Cricket.

The newly appointed Interim Committee comprises individuals respected in both the legal and cricketing spheres. It includes retired Supreme Court Judges S. I. Imam and Rohini Marasinghe, retired High Court Judge Irangani Perera, alongside Upali Dharmadasa, Rakitha Rajapakshe, and Hisham Jamaldeen. These members are expected to bring their expertise and insights to the administration of Sri Lanka Cricket, working collectively to chart a path toward success and a brighter future for the sport.
