In anticipation of a pivotal election year with the Presidential election slated for 2024, President Ranil Wickremesinghe has issued a gazette appointing a 10-member commission of inquiry.
The commission, led by retired Chief Justice Priyasath Dep PC, is tasked with obtaining, submitting information, investigating, inquiring into, and examining all existing Sri Lankan election laws and regulations. The ultimate goal of this endeavor is to make necessary recommendations for the amendment of election laws to better align with current requirements.
The 10-member commission, comprising individuals with legal expertise, experience, and deep understanding of electoral matters, is expected to work diligently over the next six months to assess existing election laws comprehensively.
Their mission will encompass identifying areas where reform or amendment is essential, and subsequently, formulating recommendations to enhance and modernize the electoral framework.
