Sri Lanka's Supreme Court has ordered former President Maithripala Sirisena, along with former Defense Secretary Hemasiri Fernando, former Inspector General of Police Pujith Jayasundara, and former head of the State Intelligence Service (SIS) Nilantha Jayawardana to provide affidavits detailing their assets and liabilities before December 30, 2023. This directive was issued because the individuals concerned had failed to pay the ordered compensation in full.
The Supreme Court had previously issued a verdict in a Fundamental Rights (FR) case related to the Easter Sunday attacks, ordering the former President and other accused to provide compensation to the victims and their families. As a result of this verdict, the individuals were instructed to pay compensation to the victims. The former President has said he can only pay compensation in installments due to financial constraints. He also sought the support of the public to raise money for this purpose.
However, in the absence of full compensation payment, the Supreme Court has now requested that the accused individuals submit affidavits disclosing their assets and liabilities. This move is aimed at ensuring that the victims of the Easter Sunday attacks receive the compensation they are entitled to.
