Powerful Politician Involved in Vehicle Scam: Illegal Import of Luxury SUV Worth Rs. 15 Million Unearthed by Panadura Walana Anti-corruption Unit

November 02, 2023

The Panadura Walana Anti-corruption Unit has seized a luxury SUV valued at Rs. 15 million, which had been illegally imported into Sri Lanka by a politician hailing from the Central Province. This revelation comes after a rigorous investigation into the illicit importation and subsequent suspicious sale of the high-end vehicle.

According to a report in Lankadeepa, the luxury SUV was slated to be sold for Rs. 10 million by the owner of a prominent car dealership. The authorities apprehended the vehicle while it was parked in the car park of an apartment complex in Narahenpita, owned by the car dealership owner. Simultaneously, the car dealership owner was taken into custody on November 1, marking a significant development in this case.

Preliminary investigations have unveiled a convoluted trail of illegal activities surrounding the luxury SUV. The vehicle was reportedly brought into the country through illicit means by the Central Province politician. Shockingly, from 2018 to 2022, the politician had managed to register the vehicle under his name at the Motor Traffic Department using forged documents, creating a facade of legitimacy around the SUV's ownership.

However, a twist in the tale reveals that in 2022, the vehicle's ownership had been transferred to another individual, raising further questions about the chain of ownership and the nature of the transaction.

The authorities launched an inquiry into this luxury SUV after receiving information suggesting that it was slated to be sold at a significantly reduced price. This discovery has cast a spotlight on the illegal importation and potentially fraudulent activities within the luxury vehicle market.
