In response to mounting criticism and complaints, the controversial monk Samanthabhadra Thera has provided a written undertaking to the Chief Prelate of the Malwaththe Chapter in Kandy, pledging not to conduct sermons that misinterpret the fundamental tenets of Buddhism. This move comes after the monk faced public backlash for offering his personal interpretations of the Dhamma, a practice that has led to some individuals filing police complaints against him.

Samanthabhadra Thera, who oversees a Buddhist place of worship known as "Umandawa," issued the written commitment to the Chief Prelate, marking the second time he has given such an assurance before the spiritual leader of the Malwatte Chapter.

The controversy surrounding the monk's unconventional interpretations of Buddhist teachings has raised concerns about the potential for misinformation and misunderstanding of the faith. Critics have argued that straying from established interpretations risks distorting the essence of Buddhism, a religion that holds a profound place in Sri Lankan culture and spirituality.
