Protests Against Electricity Tariff Hikes: Court Restricts Protesters from Entering Key Areas in Colombo

November 01, 2023

A court order issued by Colombo Fort Magistrate Thilina Gamage has prohibited a group of individuals engaged in protests against the revised electricity tariffs from accessing specific locations in Colombo.

The court order, enacted on Wednesday, serves to prevent these protesters from advancing towards key areas in Colombo, including the Presidential Secretariat, President’s House, and the Ministry of Finance premises, by using several city roads.

This judicial decision comes after the Kompanna Vidiya Police highlighted the concerns regarding potential property damage and the resulting public inconveniences resulting from the ongoing protests.

While advising the demonstrators to conduct their activities in a peaceful manner, Colombo Fort Magistrate Thilina Gamage has also directed the police to take appropriate measures, including arrests, should any protester engage in actions contrary to a peaceful demonstration.
