Three individuals have been apprehended for their alleged involvement in an extortion scheme targeting the former Chairman of the Public Utilities Commission of Sri Lanka (PUCSL), Janaka Ratnayake.
According to reliable sources, these arrests were made in connection with a reported extortion attempt in which Rs. 1.5 million was demanded from Ratnayake.
The ordeal began when Ratnayake approached the Kirulapone Police Station and filed a complaint, claiming that he had received a threatening phone call from an unknown individual. This person purportedly informed him of a contract to assassinate him and demanded a sum of Rs. 1.5 million to spare his life.
The gravity of the situation prompted Ratnayake to take immediate action by seeking the intervention of law enforcement.
Subsequently, this case was transferred to the Colombo Crimes Division (CCD) on the orders of the Senior Deputy Inspector General (SDIG) in charge of the Western Province.
