Teachers' unions in Sri Lanka have organized protests and demonstrations in front of schools across the country today. These demonstrations come in the wake of a recent protest in the Battaramulla Pelawatta area on October 24, during which police deployed tear gas and water cannons, resulting in several injuries.
Joseph Stalin, the General Secretary of the Ceylon Teachers Union, confirmed that the protests were scheduled to take place after school hours, starting at 1.30 pm today.
The ongoing protests are a manifestation of the teachers' demands for better working conditions, improved salaries, and the resolution of various grievances within the education sector.
In response to these protests, the Ministry of Education has announced that the second school term for the year 2023 in government and government-approved private schools will officially end today, October 27. The third school term is scheduled to commence on November 1.
As part of the term break, government and government-approved private schools will remain closed on October 30 and 31. The protests have drawn attention to the challenges faced by educators in Sri Lanka.
