Heavy Rainfall Causes Flooding in Matara and Kamburupitiya, Motorists Urged to Exercise Caution

Intense and relentless rainfall in Matara and Kamburupitiya areas has resulted in significant flooding, with the Nilwala River overflowing and affecting numerous regions, reports the Irrigation Department.

S.P.C. Sugeeshwara, the Director of Irrigation (Hydrology & Disaster Management), issued an advisory urging motorists traversing these inundated areas to exercise extreme caution. The current weather conditions and rising water levels pose a potential risk to road users.

The heavy downpour has particularly impacted the Athuraliya, Malimbada, Kamburupitiya, and Matara Divisional Secretariat divisions, leading to extensive flooding in low-lying areas along the Nilwala River. Sugeeshwara anticipates that these regions will continue to face the effects of the flood throughout the day.

On a more positive note, the water levels of the Kirindi Oya, which had been steadily rising last night in Wellawaya, have now returned to normal, indicating some relief for this area.

Authorities are closely monitoring the situation and providing assistance to affected residents.
