Public Security Minister Tiran Alles Retracts Controversial Online Safety Bill to Address Concerns, Promises Amendments

The Minister of Public Security, Tiran Alles, has made the decision to retract the 'Online Safety Bill,' initially presented in Parliament, with the intention of reintroducing it following a series of substantial amendments, according to Ceylon Today, a newspaper owned by Alles.

The 'Online Safety Bill' was introduced to Parliament on October 3 by Minister Alles. However, the bill quickly sparked criticism and debates among various local and international stakeholders who voiced concerns about the lack of clarity in the bill's provisions.

In response to these concerns, Minister Alles clarified that the decision to withdraw the bill was not influenced by external pressure but rather represented a proactive step to refine and enhance the legislation. He expressed his commitment to reintroduce the bill in Parliament after making the necessary amendments.
