In the wake of recent disorderly incidents within the Sri Lankan Parliament, the government has taken steps to create an independent entity responsible for monitoring and regulating the conduct of Members of Parliament (MPs).
Prime Minister Dinesh Gunawardena and Minister of Justice, Prison Affairs, and Constitutional Reforms Wijeyadasa Rajapakshe presented a joint proposal during the Cabinet of Ministers' meeting on Monday, October 23.
Following deliberation, the Cabinet of Ministers granted approval to seek the input of the Speaker and political party leaders represented in Parliament regarding the preliminary draft bill for instituting a code of conduct for MPs and the establishment of an overseeing panel.
Furthermore, the Cabinet has instructed the Legal Draftsman to draft a bill that reflects the collective perspectives of the Speaker and political party leaders.
President Ranil Wickremesinghe, presiding over the Cabinet meeting, expressed his strong disapproval of the recent instances of unruly behavior by MPs.
