Sri Lanka's political landscape was stirred by a controversial statement made by Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) Parliamentarian S. B. Dissanayake. During his appearance on the political program "360 Time" aired on TV Derana on the night of October 23, Dissanayake made a veiled threat against President Ranil Wickremesinghe's government, suggesting that measures taken against the SLPP could lead to its downfall.
In response to a question about what the SLPP would do if all its ministers were removed, Dissanayake responded, "No, there is. We can overthrow the government. There are many things we can do. We can defeat the budget. There are many things we can do. We have no hope of doing that."
Dissanayake's comments come a day after the President initiated a mini Cabinet reshuffle removing SLPP MP Keheliya Rambukwella from the Ministry of Health.
The Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna, the party currently in power, is a key player in the country's political landscape, and any significant internal turmoil or challenges could have far-reaching consequences. The remarks by Dissanayake underscore potential divisions within the SLPP and add to the existing political tensions in Sri Lanka.
