Zonal Education Directors Empowered to Close Schools in Adverse Weather Areas: Heavy Rainfalls Predicted in Several Areas

In a proactive move to address the potential threats posed by adverse weather conditions in several areas, Zonal Education Directors have been empowered to make decisions regarding the closure of schools. The affected regions include Akuressa, Deniyaya, Mulatiyana, and Walasmulla, where the possibility of flood situations in low-lying areas along the Nilwala River valley has raised concerns.

Recent weather forecasts have indicated the likelihood of heavy rainfall in these areas, which could lead to flooding in some low-lying regions. The affected divisions include Kotapola, Pitabeddara, Akuressa, Pasgoda, Athuraliya, Malimbada, Thihagoda, Matara, and Devinuwara. As a precautionary measure, Zonal Education Directors have been granted the authority to decide on school closures in response to these conditions.

While the possibility of flood situations has been identified in certain areas, the Disaster Management Centre has urged the public to exercise caution and remain vigilant. Preparedness and adherence to safety measures are essential during such weather events to minimize risks and ensure the well-being of communities.
