Sri Lanka's rugby community is in mourning following the passing of one of its most esteemed figures, Summa Navaratnam, at the age of 98. Summa Navaratnam, a renowned player and sports leader, left an indelible mark on the country's rugby history.
Summa Navaratnam's rugby journey began at Royal College, and later, he continued to exhibit his exceptional skills as a player at CR & FC. Beyond his achievements on the field, he went on to serve as the President of Sri Lanka Rugby, solidifying his legacy in the sport.
Navaratnam was more than a rugby legend; he was a mentor and a guide to countless young players. He always emphasized that the essence of the game lies not just in winning or losing but, most importantly, in enjoying every moment on the field. His message to aspiring athletes was one of sportsmanship and camaraderie.
Born on May 21, 1925, in Araly, Vaddukoddai, Jaffna, in the Northern Province of Sri Lanka, Summa Navaratnam was the fifth child in his family. His father, SS Navaratnam, served as a civil servant, instilling values of discipline and service in the young Summa.
Throughout his life, Summa Navaratnam remained a symbol of dedication and passion for rugby. His commitment to the sport extended far beyond his playing years, making him a cherished figure in the hearts of rugby enthusiasts in Sri Lanka.
