Government will Introduce Amendments to Online Safety Bill Amid Legal Challenges: Attorney General Informs Court

The Attorney General has informed the Supreme Court that the government intends to introduce amendments to the Online Safety Bill, which has already been presented to Parliament. The move comes in the wake of mounting concerns and a total of 45 Fundamental Rights (FR) petitions filed against the controversial legislation.

The Online Safety Bill has garnered widespread attention due to its provisions, which have been criticized for their potential to curtail online freedom and freedom of expression. These concerns have prompted a diverse group of petitioners to challenge the bill in court, with petitioners hailing from political parties, the journalism community, and civil activist circles.

As the legal challenges proceed in the Supreme Court, the government's willingness to adapt the bill based on feedback and critiques will be closely observed.
