Police Investigation Launched into Ransom Demand and Attempted Murder Threat on Former Public Utilities Commission Chairman Janaka Rathnayake

Police have launched an investigation into an incident where an organized crime gang allegedly demanded a ransom of 1.5 million rupees to spare the life of Mr. Janaka Ratnayake, the former chairman of the Public Utilities Commission and a prominent businessman.

The incident centers around an individual known as Bloemandhal Sankha, who is reported to be residing in Dubai, and who is alleged to have received the ransom funds. The complex ordeal unfolded on October 16th between 7:10 a.m. and 9:00 a.m. when Mr. Janaka Rathnayake was confronted with a terrifying threat to his life.

According to the police report, Rathnayake was contacted by an individual who identified himself as Sanka Blumandel. This person had originally been contracted with a sum of 8 million rupees to carry out an assassination, but shocking details emerged as he communicated with Mr. Rathnayake. The caller reportedly reneged on the contract to carry out the murder, and instead, he demanded 1.5 million rupees to spare Mr. Rathnayake's life.

Rathnayake had reportedly complied with the demands and instructed an employee to hand over 1.5 million rupees from the money located in his office to the individual who had issued the chilling threats.
