Proposal for Ravi Karunanayake's Leadership Role Deferred by UNP Central Committee: Party Decides to Maintain Status Quo

A proposal suggesting that former minister Ravi Karunanayake assume the role of deputy leader or general secretary within the United National Party (UNP) has been discussed during the party's Central Committee meeting. However, party seniors have expressed the view that there is no immediate need for changes in the party's leadership positions.

The UNP Central Committee convened under the guidance of Party Leader President Ranil Wickremesinghe to address this proposal and other matters.

Party Chairman Vajira Abeywardena stressed the importance of unity and moving forward collectively during the meeting. While the proposal for Ravi Karunanayake's potential appointment was on the table, party seniors advocated the retention of the current party positions.

Deputy Leader Ruwan Wijayawardena and Deputy Leader Akila Viraj Kariyawasam underlined the active role of the party's position holders in working across the country to build the party at the grassroots level effectively.

It's worth noting that a previous proposal had suggested the abolition of all positions within the UNP, except for those of leader, general secretary, and chairman, with the formation of a leadership board. However, during the recent Central Committee meeting, it was decided that this proposal would not be implemented.
