In a move to assist the country's agriculture sector, the Sri Lankan Cabinet has given its approval for compensation to be provided to 53,965 farmers who suffered losses due to the drought during the Yala season.
The severe drought conditions had a devastating impact on the agriculture sector, resulting in the destruction of a vast expanse of paddy cultivation. Approximately 58,000 acres of paddy fields were adversely affected, leaving farmers in distress.
The compensation package aims to alleviate the financial burden borne by these farmers and support their recovery from the losses incurred during the Yala season. Sri Lanka heavily relies on agriculture, and such natural disasters can have far-reaching economic consequences.
