A devastating accident in Velikulam, Vavuniya, has resulted in the loss of two Special Task Force (STF) personnel's lives and left five others injured. The incident occurred late last night around 9:30 p.m. during heavy rainfall when the Land Rover Defender, belonging to the STF, collided with a cow, leading to the vehicle veering off the road and crashing into a wall.
According to police reports, the accident unfolded in the midst of a downpour, causing reduced visibility and challenging road conditions. The collision with the cow proved fatal, resulting in the Land Rover Defender losing control and colliding with a wall.
Tragically, two personnel attached to the STF camp in Madukanda, Vavuniya, lost their lives in the accident. The deceased have been identified as two Police Constables of the STF, aged 29 and 31, hailing from Kurunegala and Medawachchiya, respectively.
Five other STF personnel were also severely injured in the crash. They have been rushed to the Vavuniya Hospital for medical treatment, with two of them currently listed in critical condition. The injured include a Sub-Inspector (SI), two Sergeants, and a Police Constable who was driving the vehicle at the time of the accident.
Vavuniya Police have initiated further investigations into the incident to determine the circumstances surrounding the collision.
