Lawyers Protest Outside Supreme Court Premises Today Seeking Justice for Resigned Magistrate Saravanarajah

A  demonstration by members of the legal fraternity took place outside the Supreme Court today, as a group lawyers gathered to voice their concerns regarding the perceived threats to the independence of the judiciary.

This protest comes in the wake of the recent departure of Magistrate T Saravanarajah from the country, who cited threats to his life and pressures linked to his judicial duties as reasons for his decision.

Magistrate Saravanarajah's abrupt resignation, which sent shockwaves through the legal community, has raised serious questions about the challenges faced by judges in fulfilling their roles without fear or intimidation.

His departure followed a controversial ruling he made concerning the Kurundimalai temple, which allegedly sparked tensions and threats against him.

The Bar Association of Sri Lanka (BASL) swiftly responded to these developments by submitting a formal request to the Chief Justice, urging an investigation into the circumstances surrounding Magistrate Saravanarajah's exit. The BASL, as the authoritative body representing the legal profession, has taken the initiative to seek answers and ensure that justice prevails.
