Former President Maithripala Sirisena, who currently chairs the Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP), has categorically denied any preparations for an alliance with the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) ahead of upcoming elections. Instead, Sirisena outlined his party's priorities, including the formulation of a manifesto and the expansion of organizational activities at the district and constituency levels.
Sirisena's statement comes amid speculation and rumors surrounding potential political alliances in Sri Lanka's dynamic political landscape. While the SLFP and SLPP share elements of the political spectrum, Sirisena has made it clear that his party will not engage in an alliance with the SLPP.
However, the SLFP, under Sirisena's leadership, is grappling with internal challenges, including power struggles within the party. Recently, Dayasiri Jayasekera, who served as the General Secretary of the party, was removed from his position, exacerbating tensions within the SLFP. These internal divisions have led to disappointment among party members, with some distancing themselves from party affairs.
In the face of these internal challenges, Sirisena emphasized the need for his party to regroup and focus on its core objectives. Discussions are underway to craft a comprehensive manifesto that aligns with the SLFP's vision for the country. Simultaneously, efforts are being made to strengthen the party's presence at the district and constituency levels, potentially rejuvenating the SLFP's role in Sri Lankan politics.
