In response to the escalating water levels in the vicinity of the Matara grid substation, the Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) has taken proactive safety measures. Power and Energy Minister Kanchana Wijesekera announced today that as a precautionary measure, the power supply will be disconnected from the Matara grid substation.
The decision to disconnect power from the Matara grid substation aims to ensure the safety of both CEB personnel and the surrounding community in light of the rising water levels in the area. The Minister assured that the disconnection of power from the affected areas in Matara is temporary and intended solely for safety reasons.
Furthermore, Minister Wijesekera elaborated that power to the affected areas in Matara will be promptly restored shortly after the disconnection. This restoration of power will be facilitated through the Deniyaya and Beliatta substation, ensuring that residents in these regions continue to receive a stable power supply.
In preparation for the shutdown and the safety of CEB personnel stationed at the Matara grid substation, the Sri Lanka Navy has put boats and personnel on standby. This proactive approach ensures that the evacuation of CEB personnel will be efficiently managed once the power is disconnected and ensures their well-being during this safety measure.
The Minister emphasized that these actions are taken to safeguard both the infrastructure and the lives of those living in the Matara region
