In response to the ongoing heavy rainfall and potential flooding in several regions, the Sri Lanka Army has deployed a contingent of 600 personnel to undertake flood and disaster relief operations in the Matara District. This swift deployment comes as part of the government's proactive measures to address the challenging weather conditions that have been affecting various parts of the country.

According to the Defence Ministry, these dedicated personnel will be engaged in relief activities aimed at mitigating the impact of the floods on local communities. Their tasks may include assisting residents in flood-affected areas, providing essential supplies, and ensuring the safety and well-being of those affected by the adverse weather conditions.

In addition to the Matara District, weather authorities have issued warnings for heavy rainfall in multiple provinces and districts, including Western, Sabaragamuwa, Southern, North-western, Kandy, and Nuwara-Eliya. Fairly heavy rains exceeding 75mm are expected in various locations across these regions.

Furthermore, the National Building Research Organisation (NBRO) has issued landslide warnings for nine districts: Galle, Kalutara, Matara, Ratnapura, Colombo, Gampaha, Hambantota, Kegalle, and Kandy. These warnings emphasize the need for residents and local authorities to remain vigilant and take appropriate precautions to safeguard lives and property.
