A tragic incident unfolded at Independence Square roundabout in Colombo last evening when a 25-year-old police constable, A. Priyankara, was fatally run over by a speeding SUV. Sadly, Priyankara succumbed to his injuries earlier today.
The incident occurred when the young constable was performing his duty, and he was struck by the SUV driven by a 27-year-old individual. The driver, who was arrested immediately after the accident, was identified as a technical engineer working for a private company and a resident of Narahenpita.
The vehicle was reportedly traveling at high speed, and the driver failed to control its velocity, leading to the tragic accident. The SUV eventually came to a halt after crashing into the fountain situated at the center of Independence Square Roundabout.
The driver, who is reportedly the son of a former volunteer obstetrician and gynaecologist at the police hospital, held various positions during their service and was even conferred the rank of Deputy Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP). However, the police confirmed that he had left his position at the police hospital several years ago.
Following the accident, a specialized team from the Narahenpita Police swiftly initiated an investigation under the directives of the Officer-in-Charge (OIC) of the station.
