A shocking incident unfolded near the Independence Square Roundabout in Colombo on Thursday, leaving a traffic police constable severely injured. The incident occurred when the son of a high-ranking police officer allegedly ran over the constable, resulting in a dramatic collision.

The injured constable has been identified as A. Priyankara, a resident of Walasmulla. He was on duty when the incident took place. After the collision, Priyankara was rushed to the Colombo National Hospital in critical condition, receiving urgent medical attention.

The driver of the SUV involved in the incident, who is reportedly the son of a high-ranking police officer, has been taken into custody by authorities. The arrest occurred after the individual allegedly ran over the police constable and the vehicle subsequently came to a stop after crashing into the central fountain at the Independence Square Roundabout.

A specialized team from the Narahenpita Police has been assigned to investigate the accident. This investigative team is operating under the guidance of the Officer-in-Charge (OIC) of the Cinnamon Gardens Police Station.

The incident has raised concerns and garnered significant attention, particularly due to the involvement of a high-ranking police officer's son. Authorities are expected to conduct a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident to ascertain any potential legal consequences.
