Parliamentary Committee on Public Finance Calls for Forensic Audit on Wheat Flour Issue, Advocates for Price Formula

The Parliamentary Committee on Public Finance has issued a directive to the Auditor General, urging the initiation of a forensic audit to investigate the wheat flour issue, a matter of significant concern for Sri Lanka's economy and consumers.

Dr. Harsha De Silva, Member of Parliament and Chairman of the Committee, emphasized the urgency of the situation, instructing that a comprehensive report on the matter should be submitted within a two-month timeframe.

The Parliamentary Committee on Public Finance has stressed the necessity of establishing a price formula to regulate the cost of wheat flour effectively. This move aims to address the inconsistency in wheat flour prices observed across the country.

Furthermore, the committee highlighted that the reduction of taxes on various commodities under the Singapore Free Trade Agreement has been approved. However, specific attention was drawn to the issue of wheat flour pricing, which continues to create disparities in the market.

Members of the committee pointed out that wheat flour is currently sold at different price points across Sri Lanka. In an effort to establish transparency and fairness in pricing, the committee conveyed that a kilogram of wheat flour should ideally be sold for Rs. 190, aligning with the market's needs and economic considerations.

Chairman Dr. Harsha De Silva underscored that the current pricing structure relies on two distinct calculations, which, in the committee's view, requires reform and standardization to ensure equity and stability in the wheat flour market.
