A tribute ceremony to commemorate the illustrious career of senior journalist Edmund Ranasinghe, the esteemed founding editor and editorial director of the 'Divaina' newspaper, is set to take place tomorrow (03) at 3:00 pm at the Presidential Secretariat. The event, presided over by President Ranil Wickremesinghe, marks the initiation of a program conceived by the President to recognize and honor senior journalists who have made significant contributions to Sri Lankan journalism.
This ceremony serves as an expression of appreciation for Mr. Ranasinghe's unwavering dedication to the field, spanning seven decades. To commemorate his legacy, a book titled 'Edmond’s Newspaper Revolution,' compiled by the 93-year-old journalist himself, will be published.
The keynote address at the tribute ceremony will be delivered by Mr. Upali Tennakoon, the former Editor-In-Chief of the Island and Rivira newspapers, who currently resides in the United States of America.
Edmond Ranasinghe embarked on his remarkable journalism career in 1952 as a journalist at the Lake House's 'Daily News' newspaper. In a notable act of protest in 1973, while serving as the News Editor and holding the title of Deputy Editor, he resigned from his position in response to the government's takeover of the Lake House.
In 1977, Mr. Ranasinghe was once again invited to serve as the Editor of 'Dinamina' by the Lake House, and later, he assumed the role of Editor at 'Silumina.'
In 1981, he became the founding Editor of the 'Divaina' newspaper, pioneering a journalistic revolution in Sri Lanka that propelled the newspaper to unprecedented popularity within a remarkably short period. In 2016, at the age of 86, Mr. Ranasinghe returned to the helm as Editor of 'Silumina,' a testament to his enduring commitment to the field of journalism.
