Public Security Minister Tiran Alles Initiates CID Investigation into Resignation of Mullaitivu District Judge Amid Threats

Mullaitivu District Judge T. Saravanarajah's recent resignation, which he attributed to threats and harassment following his ruling on the Kurundimalai temple issue, has prompted a comprehensive investigation ordered by Public Security Minister Tiran Alles.

The judge's decision to step down from his post has raised concerns about judicial independence and safety within Sri Lanka's legal system. In light of this, Minister Alles has directed the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) to conduct a thorough inquiry into the events leading up to Judge Saravanarajah's resignation and departure from the country.

This investigation aims to uncover any potential threats, harassment, or undue influence that may have played a role in the judge's resignation, ensuring transparency and accountability in the matter.

Additionally, the Bar Association, a the main professional body of lawyers in the country, has taken an active interest in the case. They have formally written to the Chief Justice, requesting a review and investigation into the circumstances surrounding Judge Saravanarajah's departure.

The resignation of a district judge due to perceived threats and pressures poses significant questions about the state of judicial independence in Sri Lanka. Minister Alles's decision to initiate an inquiry reflects the government's commitment to safeguarding the integrity of the legal system and ensuring the safety of judges in their duties.
