President Ranil Wickremesinghe is poised to announce a new Inspector General of Police (IGP) for Sri Lanka later this month following a decision by the Police Commission to deny any further extension of service to the present IGP, Chandana Wickremeratne.
The Police Commission's decision to withhold further extensions came as a note of caution, particularly in light of escalating concerns regarding the deteriorating law-and-order situation in the country. Wickremeratne's term had previously been extended for a three-month period, which is set to expire on October 9.
Chandana Wickremeratne's tenure had originally been slated to end on March 26; however, an earlier extension granted him continued service until June 26. The Police Commission's latest refusal to extend his term has sparked anticipation of a change in leadership within the Sri Lankan police force.
The decision by the Police Commission coincides with a surge in complaints regarding the state of law and order in the country. Reports of daily murders and threats against parliamentarians have raised concerns about the effectiveness of law enforcement. Additionally, allegations of selective enforcement within the higher ranks of the police force have drawn criticism towards the Public Security Ministry.
