Former Sri Lankan cricketer Sachithra Senanayake, who had been held in remand custody due to match-fixing allegations, has been granted bail by the Colombo Magistrate's Court. The cricketer was arrested when he surrendered himself to the Special Investigations Unit of the Sports Ministry earlier on the same day.
The cricketing world was taken aback when Senanayake was apprehended on September 6, 2023, on charges related to match-fixing. Prior to this, the Colombo Magistrates Court had imposed an overseas travel ban on the cricketer on August 14, following directives from the Attorney General’s Department. The ban was a response to the mounting evidence that had been gathered, supporting the allegations of match-fixing, ultimately leading to the commencement of criminal proceedings against Senanayake.
With his release on bail, Senanayake now awaits further legal proceedings to address the allegations levied against him.
