The government has decided to increase the import tax on powdered milk (known as PAL) by 10% per kilogram, effective immediately.
Despite this significant change in the import tax, consumers can breathe a sigh of relief, as the Minister of Trade, Nalin Fernando, has confirmed that the price of milk powder in the local market will remain unchanged.
A senior government spokesperson said the decision to hike the import tax on powdered milk is part of the government's broader strategy to encourage local production and self-reliance while ensuring a steady supply of essential commodities. He explained that this measure is intended to support local dairy farmers and reduce the dependency on imported powdered milk.
