September 22, 2023

A  meeting convened at the Presidential Secretariat between representatives of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the Sri Lankan government highlighted the progress of vital reforms and cost reflective pricing mechanisms within the electricity and energy sectors. Additionally, discussions encompassed the advancements made in the Aswasuma welfare program and the broader economic reforms undertaken by the Government of Sri Lanka (GOSL).

The IMF delegation, led by Senior Mission Chief Peter Breuer, engaged in a comprehensive dialogue with key Sri Lankan officials, including Chief of Staff to the President Sagala Rathnayke, Minister Kanchana Wijesekera, State Minister of Finance Shehan Semasinghe, Governor of the Central Bank Nandalal Weerasinghe, and Secretary to the Ministry of Finance Mahinda Siriwardhane. Also in attendance were officials from the President's office and the Ministry of Finance.

One of the focal points of the meeting was a thorough assessment of the reforms and pricing mechanisms implemented in the electricity and energy sectors. Sri Lanka has been actively working to enhance these vital sectors to ensure sustainability, affordability, and efficiency, with a strong emphasis on cost reflective pricing mechanisms. These discussions are particularly timely given the significance of electricity and energy in supporting economic growth and development.

Another crucial aspect of the meeting centered on the Aswasuma welfare program's progress. This initiative plays a pivotal role in improving the lives of vulnerable segments of the population, ensuring access to essential services, and promoting social welfare.

The gathering also provided an opportunity to review the comprehensive economic reforms undertaken by the GOSL. The Sri Lankan government has been focused on implementing policies aimed at stimulating economic growth, attracting investments, and enhancing the overall economic landscape of the country.
