Sri Lanka Reaffirms Commitment to Nuclear Disarmament by Ratifying Comprehensive Nuclear Test Ban Treaty

September 22, 2023

Sri Lanka, in a resolute declaration of its unwavering dedication to nuclear disarmament and non-proliferation, has officially ratified the Comprehensive Nuclear Test Ban Treaty (CTBT). The announcement came during a press conference convened as part of the European Union's Article 14 Conference on the CTBT.

During the press briefing, Sri Lanka's Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ali Sabry, underscored the country's enduring commitment to nuclear disarmament and non-proliferation. This significant move reaffirms Sri Lanka's longstanding and consistent policy on these critical global issues.

Remarkably, Sri Lanka's association with the CTBT dates back to its inception, as the nation was among the first to sign the treaty in October 1996, mere days after it was opened for signature. Furthermore, in 1996, Sri Lanka became the 13th country to enter into a facility agreement with the Comprehensive Nuclear Test Ban Treaty Organization (CTBTO). This agreement led to the establishment of an auxiliary seismic station in Pallekale, Kandy, further solidifying the country's commitment to monitoring and enforcing the treaty's provisions.

The ratification of the CTBT by Sri Lanka represents a significant step forward in the global effort to prevent nuclear testing and the proliferation of nuclear weapons. The treaty, which has garnered widespread international support, prohibits all nuclear explosions for both civilian and military purposes.
