September 21, 2023

President Ranil Wickremesinghe delivered a compelling address at the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) yesterday, outlining the nation's determined commitment to combat climate change. The President's speech outlined ambitious goals aimed at significantly reducing Sri Lanka's carbon footprint and fostering a sustainable future.

In his address to the UNGA, President Wickremesinghe announced a series of climate-related commitments that drew significant attention from the international community. These commitments include:

  1. 70% Renewable Energy by 2030: Sri Lanka has set a target to achieve 70% of its electricity generation from renewable energy sources by the year 2030. This represents a substantial increase in the use of clean and sustainable energy sources and demonstrates the country's dedication to reducing its reliance on fossil fuels.

  2. 32% Increase in Forest Cover: The President outlined a bold initiative to increase the nation's forest cover by 32%. This reforestation effort is crucial in absorbing carbon dioxide and mitigating the effects of deforestation, which have been a global concern.

  3. 14.5% Reduction in Greenhouse Gas Emissions: Sri Lanka is committed to reducing its greenhouse gas emissions by 14.5% as a concrete step toward addressing climate change. This reduction will contribute to the global efforts to limit global warming and its associated impacts.

  4. Coal Elimination by 2040: In a significant move, Sri Lanka has set a target to eliminate coal usage entirely by 2040. This reflects the government's determination to transition to cleaner energy sources and reduce carbon emissions.

  5. Net-Zero Emissions by 2050: Perhaps the most ambitious commitment of all, President Wickremesinghe pledged that Sri Lanka would achieve net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050. This long-term goal aligns with international efforts to limit global warming and avoid the worst consequences of climate change.

President Wickremesinghe emphasized the importance of global cooperation and called on other nations to join hands in the fight against climate change. He stressed that the world must work together to achieve sustainable development, preserve biodiversity, and secure a better future for generations to come.
