Six Suspects Released on Bail in Thiyagi Thileepan Remembrance Vehicle Attack Case

September 22, 2023

All six suspects arrested in connection with the attack on the Thiyagi Thileepan Remembrance vehicle and the assault on Member of Parliament S. Gajendran have been released on bail as of last evening. The suspects, who were initially remanded until October 5th, were granted bail following an immediate motion filed by the Police in the Trincomalee court.

The decision to release the suspects on bail came after the police expressed concerns about potential mass protests and ethnic tensions in Trincomalee, should the suspects remain in remand custody. The police argued that releasing the individuals on bail would help mitigate the risk of public unrest.

In addition to requesting bail, the police also sought the court's permission to conduct an identification parade involving the suspects. This request was based on video evidence related to the attack on the Thiyagi Thileepan Remembrance vehicle and the assault on MP S. Gajendran. An identification parade is a standard procedure in criminal investigations to confirm the involvement of suspects in alleged crimes.
