Damning Accusations in Parliament: Field Marshal Sarath Fonseka Accuses Former Presidents of Complicity in Easter Sunday Attacks

September 21, 2023

In a blistering statement delivered in Parliament, former Army Commander Field Marshal Sarath Fonseka made explosive allegations against former Presidents Gotabhaya Rajapaksa and Maithripala Sirisena regarding the Easter Sunday Attacks.

Fonseka pointedly stated that both Sirisena and Gotabhaya Rajapaksa should be held accountable for the tragic attacks that resulted in the loss of over 270 lives.

He went on to detail the serious charges against Sirisena, asserting that during his presidency, Sirisena failed to invite the then Prime Minister, Defence State Minister, or the Inspector General of Police to critical security council meetings. Fonseka also accused Sirisena of imprisoning DIG Nalaka Silva, who had been investigating Saharan Hashim, alleging that these actions ultimately created the conditions for the Easter Sunday attacks.

Field Marshal Fonseka further claimed that during the actual terrorist attack, Sirisena was in hiding in Singapore. He alleged that Sirisena had deliberately lied to the Parliamentary Select Committee tasked with investigating the matter.

Moreover, Fonseka raised the suspicion that Sirisena may have met with Suresh Sallay in India just before the attacks—an accusation that Sirisena vehemently denied during the parliamentary session
