Indika De Soysa, Chairman of the Federation of Information Technology Sri Lanka (FITIS), has set forth an ambitious target to contribute a substantial $15 billion to Sri Lanka's gross domestic product (GDP) by 2030 through the expansion of the digital economy.
During a press conference held at the Presidential Media Centre on September 20th, De Soysa highlighted the global trend in which developed nations derive approximately 40% of their GDP from the digital economy. In contrast, Sri Lanka's current digital economy contribution stands at 5%. The aim is to elevate this contribution to 20% and consequently increase the current GDP of $3.7 billion to $15 billion by 2030.
De Soysa emphasized the importance of enhancing technological knowledge among Sri Lankans, and in collaboration with the DIGIECON 2030 government program, comprehensive guidelines for the next seven years are under development.
These ambitious digitalization will be discussed further at the upcoming 41st National Information Technology Conference, themed 'Towards a Sustainable Digital Society.' The conference is scheduled to be held from October 11th to 13th at the Shangri-La Hotel in Colombo.
