Ban Trade Union Action in Essential Services: Adjournment Motion Presented to Parliament by Ruling Party MP

September 20, 2023

Colombo District MP Madhura Withanage has submitted a motion to adjourn Parliament, suggesting that tasks crucial to the daily lives of the people be designated as essential services for an extended period, and officials involved cannot participate in strikes that could negatively impact people's lives.

Withanage stated that the proposal is made due to the disruptions caused by strikes conducted by a minority for professional rights, affecting the majority's daily lives. He emphasized the need for a recognized mechanism to address the concerns of officials within this legislation.

During the presentation of the proposal, Withanage pointed out that continuous strikes in sectors providing essential services significantly disrupt people's daily lives and infringe upon their fundamental rights.
