Sinhalese Group in Trincomalee Lodge Police Complaint Against Organizers of Thileepan Commemoration

September 20, 2023

A group of Buddhist monks in Trincomalee have lodged a complaint with the police against those who commemorated Thiyagi Thileepan, a prominent figure in the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE), yesterday.

The commemoration elicited a strong reaction from the Sinhalese community, as the LTTE was a banned terrorist organization that fought a civil war against the Sri Lankan government for over two decades. A group of Sinhalese men launched an attack on the commemorative vehicle, and six of them have been arrested by the police.

The Gokannapura Protection Association, an organization led by Buddhist monks, has accused the organizers of the commemoration of promoting terrorism and inciting violence. The police are investigating the incident.
