In a fiery response on social media, Sabaragamuwa Province Governor Navin Dissanayake took aim at Canadian Foreign Minister Melanie Joly, labeling her "very immature" and challenging her to provide proof before making accusations against an independent nation. Dissanayake's sharp response comes in the wake of Minister Joly's comments linking Indian government agents to the killing of Sikh-Canadian activist Hardeep Singh Nijjar earlier this year.
“A very immature foreign minister...show the proof before you start attacking another independent country...Foreign interference angle is a joke when you keep interfering, cajoling and harrasing Sri-lanka at every internatuonal forum...go take a hike anglo -saxon hegemony is over,” Dissanayake said on Twitter.
Hardeep Singh Nijjar was tragically shot and killed on June 18 outside a Sikh temple in Surrey, a city in Canada's westernmost province of British Columbia. His death prompted widespread questions and condemnation, ultimately leading to Canada expelling a top Indian diplomat over the issue.
Dissanayake, a senior member of the United National Party (UNP) and a close ally of President Ranil Wickremesinghe, did not mince words in his Twitter response. He accused Minister Joly of lacking maturity and called for evidence to support her claims before launching attacks on an independent nation.
Furthermore, Governor Dissanayake criticized what he perceived as Canada's own interference in international affairs, using the term "foreign interference angle is a joke" to highlight the irony of the situation. He suggested that Canada itself has a history of meddling in the affairs of other countries
