Security Concerns Surround Thileepan Commemoration Event in Colombo Today Amidst Calls for Violence

September 19, 2023

Human rights activist Ruki Fernando has raised alarm over a message circulating on September 18th, which openly invites individuals to gather at CSR, Colombo, at 3 pm on September 19th with the apparent intention of confronting and harming individuals attending the Thileepan remembrance event organized by the Christian Solidarity Movement (CSM).

Fernando, who shared this information, has urged law enforcement authorities to take swift and appropriate action to ensure the safety and protection of participants during the event. The message, which includes visible names, has heightened concerns about the potential for violence and unrest at the commemoration.

The Thileepan remembrance event has garnered significant attention and controversy due to the involvement of Thileepan, a former member of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE), a banned terrorist organization in Sri Lanka. This has prompted several parties in Colombo to express serious reservations and apprehensions regarding the event.

In light of these security concerns and the need to maintain public order and safety, the police and relevant authorities are expected to take measures to ensure that the commemoration event proceeds peacefully and without incidents of violence or disruptions.
