Residents of Thivipuram, Puthukkudiyiruppu in the Mullaitivu district gathered in protest against a recent mob attack on Tamil National People's Front (TNPF) General Secretary S. Kajendran.
The attack occurred while he was accompanying a memorial motorcade dedicated to Thileepan in Trincomalee, with Sri Lankan police present at the scene.
The incident sparked outrage in the community, prompting local residents to take to the streets in a demonstration against the assault on the TNPF leader.
During the protest, participants expressed their concerns over the attack and the police's apparent inaction during the incident.
Notably, six individuals have since been arrested by the police in connection with the attack on S. Kajendran and the Thileepan memorial motorcade. The arrests come after mounting pressure from various quarters to bring those responsible to justice.
Thileepan, a prominent figure in the Tamil Tigers movement, is remembered annually, and memorial processions are held to commemorate his death following a hunger strike at the Nallur Temple in Jaffna in 1987.
