Power and Energy Minister Kanchana Wijesekera convened a crucial meeting on Thursday with representatives from 35 Trade Unions of the Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB). The primary agenda of the meeting was to address and discuss the ongoing reforms within the electricity sector.
During the gathering at the Ministry of Power and Energy, Minister Wijesekera provided a comprehensive briefing to the union members, shedding light on various aspects of the reform process. He elaborated on the progress made in reforming the electricity sector, outlining key elements such as the proposed structure of the new electricity act, transition timelines, human resource management and transfer plans, employee benefits and pensions, as well as the assistance received from development agencies.
One crucial point of discussion centered around the establishment of the reform secretariat, a critical component in the successful implementation of the reform agenda. Additionally, the creation of successor companies within the sector was also a focal point, highlighting the government's commitment to modernizing and enhancing the efficiency of the electricity industry.
Notably, the meeting witnessed active participation from representatives of all unions within the Ceylon Electricity Board, underscoring the unity and collective engagement of the workforce in these transformative reforms. The head of the Reform secretariat also played an integral role in the discussions.
