Addressing Parliament, Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa raised eyebrows as he criticized the fiscal decisions of the Rajapaksa administration, drawing a stark comparison between the cost of India's Chandrayaan lunar missions and the nation's own Supremesat1 program.
Premadasa asserted that while India's ambitious Chandrayaan missions, including Chandrayaan 1, 2, and 3, reportedly costed a combined total of USD 263 million, Sri Lanka, in 2012, had reportedly spent a whopping USD 320 million on the Supremesat1 program.
The Supremesat1 program, although not associated with lunar exploration, garnered significant attention due to its substantial financial commitment. Critics argue that this expenditure has strained the nation's resources, contributing to ongoing economic challenges.
Furthermore, the Opposition Leader raised concerns about the involvement of Rohitha Rajapaksa, the son of former President Mahinda Rajapaksa, in the Supremesat1 program. This connection has fueled debate and speculation surrounding the allocation of resources and contracts related to the project.
