Attorney General’s Department Directs Police to Take Action Against Former Cricket Player Sachithra Senanayake Over Match-Fixing Charges

In a significant turn of events, the Attorney General’s Department has instructed the Police Division Investigating Offences Related to Sports to initiate legal proceedings against former cricket sensation Sachithra Senanayake. 

The decision comes in response to an inquiry into allegations of match-fixing during the Lank Premier League tournament held in 2021.

According to sources within the authorities, two players who participated in the aforementioned tournament lodged formal complaints against Senanayake, alleging that he had approached them with propositions related to match-fixing.

The players' complaints prompted a thorough investigation into the matter by the authorities, ultimately leading to the decision to pursue legal action.

Sachithra Senanayake, a well-known figure in the cricketing world, is facing serious charges that could have far-reaching consequences. If proven guilty in court, he could be liable to a hefty fine of Rs 100 million or imprisonment for a maximum of 10 years, or even both. The case has garnered significant attention, drawing eyes from both the cricketing community and the public at large as Senanayake is the first local cricketer to be prosecutor by this police unit for match fixing charges.
